🎣 7 Mistakes 90% of Beginner Lure Anglers Make (and How to Avoid Them)

Published by Nature & Pêche – Gear, Tips & Packs for Fishing Enthusiasts

👋 Introduction

Lure fishing is attracting more and more enthusiasts, but like any discipline, the beginning can be frustrating. You cast, you retrieve, but nothing bites? You're not alone.

Here are the 7 most common mistakes beginners make in lure fishing, with concrete solutions to progress faster than others.

❌ 1. Choosing your lures "randomly"

📉 The problem:

Too many beginners fill their tackle box with ill-suited lures, often chosen for their looks... not for their effectiveness.

✅ The solution:

Start with reliable options. Focus on:

1 or 2 types of lures (e.g., soft shad + spinnerbait)

2 sizes (small for perch, medium for pike)

2 or 3 colors max (natural + flashy)

🎯 Tip: use a starter pack ready to fish so you don't make mistakes.

❌ 2. Using unsuitable rods or reels

📉 The problem:

A rod that's too stiff or too soft = poorly controlled retrieves + fatigue + dulled bite sensitivity.

✅ The solution:

Opt for a versatile 5–20g or 7–28g spinning rod, and a size 2500 reel with thin braided line (0.12 to 0.16 mm).

❌ 3. Casting without thinking... and hoping

📉 The problem:

Too many beginners cast in all directions, randomly, without observation or strategy.

✅ The solution:

Look for:

Edges, obstacles, drop-offs

Shaded or current areas

Areas where you've seen fish feeding, ripples, birds...

🎯 10 well-placed casts are better than one cast every 5 seconds.

❌ 4. Not varying the retrieve

📉 The problem:

Retrieving in a straight line at the same speed = "dead" lure = no interest for the fish.

✅ The solution:

Test different retrieves:

Slow + pauses

Twitches (small rod tip movements)

Stop & go

Sawtooth (shad retrieve)

💡 Don't be afraid to improvise, every day is different.

❌ 5. Believing that more expensive = better

📉 The problem:

Many think that a €25 lure will necessarily catch more fish... spoiler: no.

✅ The solution:

What matters is:

The presentation

The timing

The choice of area

➡️ A €2 soft plastic lure used well is far better than a poorly retrieved €30 swimbait.

❌ 6. Not daring to ask questions or seek advice

📉 The problem:

Sometimes we want to "do like the pros," without asking... and we go in circles.

✅ The solution:

Read blogs (like this one 😉), watch videos, ask questions on forums or Facebook groups, or in stores.

❌ 7. Giving up too quickly

📉 The problem:

You have 2 sessions without a bite, and you put your gear away.

✅ The solution:

Lure fishing is technical but rewarding. You need to:

Observe

Test

Persevere

Every failure is a learning experience. The day you catch your first pike on a soft plastic lure, you'll understand why it was worth it.
